Version 2 | Effective October 29, 2026
These Research Use Terms govern research access to the AllergenMaps Cohort Explorer and the use of data exported from it. They are offered by Allergen Maps LLC, an Indiana limited liability company ("AllergenMaps," "we," "us," or "our"). Research access is granted by application, and the person who submits a research project agrees to these terms for their research group.
The key terms in brief. The numbered sections below are the governing text.
These terms apply to research use of the Cohort Explorer and to "Research Data": every file downloaded from the Cohort Explorer (CSV, TSV, JSON, Excel, Parquet and research package downloads) and any dataset release we deliver under these terms, together with any copy, subset or file derived from them that still contains row-level records.
You accept these terms by checking the agreement box on the research project submission form. We record the version you accepted and the time you accepted it. The person who submits the project accepts these terms on behalf of the research group and is responsible for making sure every member of the group follows them. Each member who signs in to the Cohort Explorer is also bound by them.
If you and Allergen Maps LLC have signed a separate written agreement that covers research access, that agreement governs wherever it differs from these terms.
Research access is granted to an approved research group: the principal investigator named in the approved submission, and the faculty, research staff, postdoctoral researchers and students working under that principal investigator's direction on the approved project.
You may use Research Data for non-commercial research and teaching, consistent with the project described in your approved submission. If your research question changes materially, tell us so we can update the record.
Downloading exports through the Cohort Explorer's own export features, within the export allowance, is a permitted use of the Service. Scraping, automated querying and any attempt to get around usage limits remain prohibited under the Terms of Use.
These terms do not restrict information you obtain independently from public sources, such as a medication label read on DailyMed. They govern the classifications, compilations and exports AllergenMaps provides.
You may publish and present aggregate findings drawn from Research Data, including counts, percentages, prevalence estimates, figures, summary tables and statistical results, in papers, preprints, theses and dissertations, grant applications, conference presentations, posters and teaching materials. A table of allergen prevalence across a drug class is an aggregate finding. A list of individual products with their allergen classifications is row-level data and is covered by section 5.
README.md and CITATION.cff. It takes the form: AllergenMaps (year). Dataset title [dataset, version, data as of date]. Retrieved from AllergenMaps. We appreciate hearing about published work. You can send a citation or link through our contact page.
You may not share, post, publish, deposit, sell or otherwise make available row-level Research Data, or any substantial extract of it, to anyone outside the approved research group. Row-level data includes member lists of individual products (NDCs), excipient lists, filler breakdowns, complete research packages and dataset releases.
This applies to public and institutional data repositories, code repositories, supplementary files, and shared drives or folders open to people outside the group. Keep Research Data in access-controlled storage with reasonable security.
The mapping between inactive ingredients and allergen categories, and the classifications built on it, are proprietary and confidential to AllergenMaps, as the Intellectual Property and Confidentiality sections of the Terms of Use describe.
Publishing aggregate findings as section 4 permits is not a breach of this section.
Without a separate written agreement signed by Allergen Maps LLC, you may not use Research Data for any commercial purpose; resell, sublicense, rent or lend it; build it into a commercial product or service; or use it to train, fine-tune or evaluate a commercial machine-learning or artificial intelligence model.
Research carried out primarily for the benefit of a commercial organization, such as contract work for a manufacturer, counts as commercial use. If you are unsure whether a project qualifies, ask us before you start.
Research Data is provided for research and teaching. It is not medical advice, and it must not be used to make decisions about an individual patient's care, including prescribing, dispensing or counseling. The No Medical Advice and Clinical Decision Support sections of the Terms of Use continue to apply.
A product with no inactive-ingredient data in Research Data is not evidence that the product is free of any allergen.
Research Data is derived from public FDA sources, chiefly DailyMed Structured Product Labeling and the openFDA drug label API, as processed by AllergenMaps on the dataset date shown in each export (its "data as of" date and dataset version). Labels change after that date, and products can be reformulated.
Classifications reflect AllergenMaps methodology and review as of that date and may change in later versions. Each export's README describes its known limitations, and the Data Accuracy and Limitations section of the Terms of Use also applies.
Research access and Research Data are provided "AS IS" and "AS AVAILABLE," without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including warranties of accuracy, completeness, currency, merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, or non-infringement.
To the fullest extent permitted by law, AllergenMaps and its creators are not liable for any damages arising from research access, from Research Data, or from findings, publications or decisions based on them. The Limitation of Liability and Indemnification sections of the Terms of Use apply to research use.
Each export is recorded with your account, your organization if your account belongs to one, the time, the dataset and file format, the number of rows, a short fingerprint of the cohort filters, the allergen selected if any, and an export ID. The export ID is also written into every downloaded file.
We use these records to enforce the export allowance (a limit on rows exported per rolling 24 hours), to detect bulk extraction for review by our team, and to trace a file found outside an approved group back to the account that downloaded it. An export over the allowance is refused until earlier exports age out of the 24-hour window. The records are deleted after 365 days. Our Privacy Policy describes them in full.
We may suspend or end research access for a breach of these terms or of the Terms of Use, for misuse of the Service or its data, or when the approved access period ends. You may end research access at any time by telling us.
When research access ends, the research group must stop using Research Data and delete the copies it holds, except:
Sections 5, 6, 7, 10, 11 and 13 continue to apply after research access ends, for as long as the group holds any Research Data.
These terms govern research use of the Cohort Explorer and Research Data. For that use only, they take precedence over the following parts of the Terms of Use, to the extent those parts would otherwise restrict what these terms allow, such as downloading exports, keeping a dataset release we deliver, or publishing aggregate findings:
Everything else in the Terms of Use still applies to research use. That includes the rest of sections 9 and 10: no scraping or harvesting, no systematic querying to reconstruct the database, no reverse engineering, and no use of the Service or Research Data to build a competing service. Acceptable use, governing law and dispute resolution also apply as written. These terms do not change the Terms of Use for clinical use of AllergenMaps.
We change these terms only by publishing a new version on this page, with a new version number and effective date. A published version is not edited afterward. Each project submission records the version its submitter accepted.
When a new version is published, we will tell the principal investigator of each approved research group by email. Continued research access may require accepting the new version.
These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Indiana, without regard to its conflict of law provisions. Disputes arising from these terms are resolved as the Governing Law and Dispute Resolution sections of the Terms of Use provide.
Questions about these terms, or about a separate agreement for commercial use, may be directed to legal@allergenmaps.org. To apply for research access, submit a project on the researcher page.
